Śrīmad Bhāgavatam

About

What this is

srimadbhagavat.org is a free, open reading home for the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavata Purāṇa) — one of the greatest works of devotional literature in the world. The goal is one canonical, beautiful place to read this text on the web: source-faithful, accessible, and built to last.

The text

The Bhāgavata Purāṇa is one of the eighteen Mahāpurāṇas of Hinduism, composed in Sanskrit and attributed to the sage Veda Vyāsa. It spans 12 books (skandhas) and 335 chapters, containing approximately 18,000 verses. Its central teaching is bhakti — devotional love for the personal God (Viṣṇu/Kṛṣṇa) — as the highest path to liberation. Skandha 10, describing Krishna's childhood and youth in Vrindavan, is among the most beloved passages in all of world literature.

Current layers

Gujarati — All 335 chapters are available in Gujarati, from the Internet Archive scan of the Bhagwat Mahapuran in Gujarati. This is raw OCR; a cleaning pass is planned.

English — J. M. Sanyal's five-volume translation (1909–1932) is being processed and will be added as the English layer. It is the first complete English translation of the text and is in the public domain.
